The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Program and its related public health and non-profit partners frequently offer training, events, and conferences focused on the many different areas of tobacco and substance use prevention and control.

What is SBIRT?
The Maine AAP is committed to helping practitioners identify youth on this path so we can intervene earlier! Screening Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment is one evidence-based approach to doing this. Please consider joining us to enhance your skills in identifying and offering brief interventions in the primary care settings for youth on the path to substance use disorders. Motivational Interviewing is a technique using specific skills and has proven to yield better outcomes when used in the strategic treatment of youth engaging in substance misuse.
Southern Maine Harm Reduction Conference
Please join the University of New England, the Collaborative SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) Training Grant, and the City of Portland’s Public Health Division for a series of workshops about ideas and strategies aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with substance use and other high-risk behaviors. Introductory, intermediate, and advanced sessions are available during all three workshop blocks. There will also be resource tables and an interactive, harm reduction-focused installation that explores the benefits of community health engagement locations. Registration fee includes a continental breakfast and a light lunch.

The MAHPERD Annual conference provides interactive and engaging sessions with the latest information on best practices and resources for health education and physical education teachers, recreation professionals and dance educators. Learn from national, international and state experts, network with colleagues from Maine and experience professional and personal growth.

Loneliness, Longing, and Belonging
This 2 day experiential training will explore and address loneliness, longing and belonging from an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) perspective. We’ll review the basics of the mental, emotional and physical aspects of these unwanted private experiences. We’ll illustrate how people get “stuck” in these experiences – called psychological inflexibility – and end up acting in ways that keep them disconnected and isolated. We’ll illustrate how an ACT approach can help clients both make sense and make contact with these painful thoughts, feelings and sensations in the office. We’ll use the techniques of mindfulness and psychological flexibility to help them be open to making these experiences useful rather than to be avoided. And with increased psychological flexibility, we help them begin to build meaningful connections in their world. Early bird fee, $100.00 if paid by November 6th, 2018. Fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
2018 Prevention Professionals Day

Prevention Professionals Day is designed to offer Maine's Prevention Community a broad range of learning opportunities. The day will focus on providing tools and resources for the field of prevention including the basics of primary prevention, the state, regional, and local landscape of prevention, workforce development opportunities, etc. The program includes both panel presentations and plenary sessions that will provide the opportunity for interaction among the participants.
Target Audience:
The target audience of this conference includes community prevention coalition professionals and members; substance use and mental health prevention and health promotion practitioners; program managers and administrators; state agency prevention staff; volunteers and task force members; and others who deliver substance abuse and mental health prevention services or who are interested in prevention issues and practice.
Annual Infectious Disease Conference
The annual infectious disease conference targets public health issues of emerging concern to medical practitioners throughout the state. Presentation topics will focus on a range of infectious diseases. CEU's available. Register by October 15th for early bird fee of $75.00.
Understanding and Addressing Youth Gaming and Gambling
The world of what we have considered "gambling" has shifted dramatically in recent years. In this training, participants will gain an understanding of recent technological trends in gaming, and how these trends have blurred the lines between what is gaming and what is gambling. We will have special attention during this training on video and on-line gaming and sports betting, and identify some practical tools and strategies for participants to use in their professional and personal settings.
Ethical Decision Making: Exploring Perspectives and Application
The American Counseling Association 2014 Code of Ethics requires counselors to use an appropriate ethical decision-making model when confronted with ethical dilemmas (I.1.b). This highly interactive workshop will explore the philosophical underpinnings of ethical decision-making. Participants will have the opportunity to explore components of models as well as application to a variety of ethical issues, including boundaries, transparency, and digital media. The format of this program, applicable to all counseling professionals, will be presentation and group discussion. Bring your thinking (and feeling) caps!
