The Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center’s Child Development and Behavior Conference at Colby College is a program that brings a science and evidence based approach to understanding interventions that endeavor to improve the lives of children with complex needs. We have national speakers join with our regional and local experts and policy makers to bring science to service and policy. We are very excited about our program this year as it promotes utilization of an evidenced-based approach to meeting the needs of our most at risk families.

This workshop will introduce essential principles and skills associated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adolescent substance use. Participants will learn how to conceptualize cases within a CBT framework, plan treatment, and apply basic CBT strategies to intervene with adolescents who misuse substances. Case examples and role plays will be used to demonstrate use of the following core CBT skills: positive activity scheduling, problem solving, thought changing, and affect regulation. Early bird fee of $55.00 if you pay by Monday June 17th, 2019. Fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

Understanding how youth think about risks and choices around substance use, relationships, sexuality, and other health behaviors is key to developing prevention approaches that are truly effective. This training is geared for a wide range of professionals working with youth around behavior change, risk reduction, and health promotion. Registration fee includes light snacks.

The world of what we have considered “gambling” has shifted dramatically in recent years. In this training, participants will gain an understanding of recent technological trends in gaming, and how these trends have blurred the lines between what is gaming and what is gambling. We will have special attention during this training on video and on-line gaming and sports betting, and identify some practical tools and strategies for participants to use in their professional and personal settings.
This year’s conference features 34 oral presentations about addiction, public health programs and research in Maine, a poster session, and a plenary presentation, “Public Health Reimagined: A Blueprint for Building a Modern, Responsive, and Relevant Public Health System in Maine”. We do this work through a series of local and statewide initiatives, including hosting and providing training to adults. Our 2018-2019 professional development training series is designed specifically for adults working with youth to grow the network of adult allies in Maine, strengthen the knowledge and skills of network members, and promote high quality work of local trainers. This series is offered free to any interested adult in Maine. Space is limited to 40 participants.
