Through the normalization of gambling and increased access to a wide variety of gambling opportunities, as well as the stigma associated problem gambling, it is important to bring attention to gambling disorder, to educate the people of Maine about this public health issue and to find solutions to barriers we are currently facing in the prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery of problem gambling. This conference will feature expert speakers to lead conversations on trends in Maine and beyond, integrating problem gambling as a co-occurring disorder, recognizing the danger of suicide in problem gamblers and providing interventions and resources for safety, and guiding us to find solutions and ways to bring stakeholders to the table.

The world of what we have considered “gambling” has shifted dramatically in recent years. In this training, participants will gain an understanding of recent technological trends in gaming, and how these trends have blurred the lines between what is gaming and what is gambling. We will have special attention during this training on video and on-line gaming and sports betting, and identify some practical tools and strategies for participants to use in their professional and personal settings.

Prevention Professionals Day is designed to offer Maine’s Prevention Community a broad range of learning opportunities. The day will focus on providing tools and resources for the field of prevention including the basics of primary prevention, the state, regional, and local landscape of prevention, workforce development opportunities, etc. The program includes both panel presentations and plenary sessions that will provide the opportunity for interaction among the participants.
Target Audience:
The target audience of this conference includes community prevention coalition professionals and members; substance use and mental health prevention and health promotion practitioners; program managers and administrators; state agency prevention staff; volunteers and task force members; and others who deliver substance abuse and mental health prevention services or who are interested in prevention issues and practice.

This workshop is designed to provide a solid foundation for initiating and sustaining clients in treatment for problem gambling. We will focus on developing an understanding of the skill with key components in the treatment of problem and disordered gambling. An overview of evidence based treatment modalities for problem gambling will be presented and participants will have an opportunity, through interactive activities, to gain experience in using strategies for engagement, treatment planning and other interventions with gambling disordered clients. Specific attention will be devoted to addressing financial issues among clients experiencing gambling problems and how harm reduction strategies may be utilized.
As more and more opportunities for gambling are made available, it is increasingly important to improve the capacity and capability of behavioral health treatment providers to learn effective ways of addressing and treating gambling problems. This interactive training will offer a broad overview and definitions of gambling and problem gambling and how to begin to address this issue in a range of clinical settings. Effective strategies for screening and assessing problem gambling will be presented along with initial strategies for introducing intervention strategies to clients at risk for or experiencing gambling problems.
Participants who attend this conference will:
