The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Program and its related public health and non-profit partners frequently offer training, events, and conferences focused on the many different areas of tobacco and substance use prevention and control.

Holistic Prevention: Professional Development Training
The Maine Youth Action Network’s vision is for communities throughout Maine to foster the healthy development of youth and create a thriving network of engaged leaders. We do this work through a series of local and statewide initiatives, including hosting and providing training to adults. Our 2018-2019 professional development training series is designed specifically for adults working with youth to grow the network of adult allies in Maine, strengthen the knowledge and skills of network members, and promote high quality work of local trainers. This series is offered free to any interested adult in Maine. Space is limited to 40 participants.

Understanding how youth think about risks and choices around substance use, relationships, sexuality, and other health behaviors is key to developing prevention approaches that are truly effective. This training is geared for a wide range of professionals working with youth around behavior change, risk reduction, and health promotion. Fee includes a light snack.

Parent Involvement in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescent Substance Use
This workshop will introduce essential principles and skills associated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adolescent substance use. Participants will learn how to conceptualize cases within a CBT framework, plan treatment, and apply basic CBT strategies to intervene with adolescents who misuse substances. Case examples and role plays will be used to demonstrate use of the following core CBT skills: positive activity scheduling, problem solving, thought changing, and affect regulation. Early bird fee of $55.00 if you pay by Monday June 17th, 2019. Fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
23rd Annual Childhood Development and Behavior Conference
The Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center's Child Development and Behavior Conference at Colby College is a program that brings a science and evidence based approach to understanding interventions that endeavor to improve the lives of children with complex needs. We have national speakers join with our regional and local experts and policy makers to bring science to service and policy. We are very excited about our program this year as it promotes utilization of an evidenced-based approach to meeting the needs of our most at risk families.
8th Annual Let’s Go: National Obesity Conference
Join us to explore the First 1,000 Days - the critical period from preconception to age 2. Learn about the impact of maternal factors on childhood obesity and the role of early childhood factors in promoting healthy weight. A three-part series focused on leveraging prevention best practices to effectively engage youth within our communities.
Come join the Maine Youth Action Network's team, in this free training series to learn the neuroscience behind why scare tactics miss the mark in adolescent brains; strategies for directly involving youth in prevention-focused research; and how to grow and sustain lasting, supportive relationships with any young person.
