The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Program and its related public health and non-profit partners frequently offer training, events, and conferences focused on the many different areas of tobacco and substance use prevention and control.

Tobacco Intervention: Basic Skills Training
Join other healthcare professionals in this one-day training to learn more about nicotine addiction and how to integrate brief, evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions into current practice. It has been well established that brief interventions can significantly increase quit attempts and lead to long term tobacco abstinence. Led by licensed healthcare professionals, this training will increase participant confidence on working with patients or clients who use tobacco.
Maternal and Child Health & Substance Exposed Infant Conference
This two-day conference is an opportunity for professionals working with families to discuss strategies to optimize maternal and child health in Maine. Presenters each day will provide a host of information related to Social Determinants of health, Trauma Informed care, Eat Sleep Console, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Maternal Depression, Prenatal Substance Exposure and resources available for working with families in Maine. Registration includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
Annual Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Conference
This day-and-a-half annual conference and half-day post conference brings nationally recognized speakers and local experts together to discuss a wide array of tobacco treatment and prevention topics, new research, and innovative approaches to tobacco control. It also provides an opportunity to network with other tobacco treatment professionals from across the state. This is the third required training offered in the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certificate pathway for healthcare professionals in Maine. Registration fees vary as to how many days attending.

The Basic Skills Training is open to all healthcare professionals, prevention professionals, and community members who are interested in learning more about the burden of tobacco and strategies for treatment.
The training is a requirement for those interested in the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice.
Tobacco Intervention: Intensive Skills
- Explore the value of a comprehensive tobacco use assessment
- Learn to develop effective treatment plans
- Discuss considerations for medication management
- Review relapse prevention strategies
Clinicians will also spend time building on common counseling skills used in intensive tobacco treatment such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
This training is appropriate for individuals who have completed the Basic Skills Training within the past five years and are interested in increasing their tobacco treatment skills. The training is a requirement for those interested in the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice.
Registration fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

Shining a Light: Hidden Circumstances Affecting the Health and Well-being of Children and Families
Each year, pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, mental health clinicians, and other child health affiliates throughout Maine gather at our educational conferences for professional development and networking. Key topics for this year's conference include childhood trauma and mental illness, promoting post-trauma growth using the Trauma Responsive Framework, the management and treatment of obesity, suicide risk assessment and treatment, human trafficking in Maine, Innovative Plans of Care for Substance Exposed Children & Families including Fetal Alchohol Syndrome, and substance use and vaping among adolescents.
