The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Program and its related public health and non-profit partners frequently offer training, events, and conferences focused on the many different areas of tobacco and substance use prevention and control.

What is SBIRT

Screening Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment is one evidence-based approach to doing this. Please consider joining us to enhance your skills in identifying and offering brief interventions in the primary care settings for youth on the path to substance use disorders. Motivational Interviewing is a technique using specific skills and has proven to yield better outcomes when used in the strategic treatment of youth engaging in substance misuse.
Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST)
SAPST is a broad orientation to the field of substance use prevention. The modules cover the evidence-based process of the Strategic Prevention Framework: assessment, capacity building, prevention planning, implementation, evaluation, sustainability, and cultural competence. This training meets the criteria for the Maine Prevention Specialist credential requirement.
Ethics in Prevention
Ethics in Prevention training was developed under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for the Center for Application of Prevention Technologies. This training provides opportunities to engage in discussions of the six key principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics and explore a four-step decision-making model for assessing, addressing, and evaluating a range of ethical issues. Registration fee includes light breakfast and lunch.

Populations at Risk for OUDs: Risk Factors, Signs and Symptoms
Please join Eric Haram for this half-day, action-oriented session on Friday, May 31, 2019 to explore the essentials of identifying risk factors, screening, and treatment of individuals with Opioid Use Disorder. As Maine continues to face an epidemic of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and drug overdose deaths, it is essential for behavioral health and health care clinicians and organizational teams to understand the factors that contribute to individual and population risk for developing OUD, as well as ways to identify and treat individuals with this too-often deadly condition. The conference theme, “Turning the Tide: Maine’s Path Forward in Addressing the Opioid Crisis” will bring people together to discuss the many challenges those with substance use disorder and in recovery face alongside the opportunities that exist moving forward.
Alcohol Prevention Conference
This one day conference is an educational opportunity for professionals working with young adults, ages 18-25, to understand alcohol use issues in Maine and learn practical skills to apply in local communities. Early bird registration fee $25.00 if you pay by August 7th. Registration fee includes continental breakfast and lunch.
New England School of Best Practices 2019
This four-day event gives addiction and behavioral health professionals the opportunity to combine in-depth study of an area of special interest with the opportunity to learn in a beautiful, rejuvenating wilderness setting in Waterville Valley, NH. The program includes advanced clinical and administrative skilled-based treatment in best practices and evidence-based practices treatment approaches, as well as a current and emerging best opioid treatment practices, clinical supervision, management, and advanced prevention.
Designed with the seasoned behavioral health professional in mind, this focuses heavily on evidence-based and promising approaches specific to addressing addiction. The courses offered are intended to appeal to a wide array of professionals working in diverse settings. In addition to clinical, clinical supervision, and prevention topics, some course offerings this year will again address the macro area of addiction and behavioral practice such as program or agency oversight and developing effective management skills.
