The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Program and its related public health and non-profit partners frequently offer training, events, and conferences focused on the many different areas of tobacco and substance use prevention and control.

Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the University of New England is pleased to host the Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training developed by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This course is endorsed by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium and is a requirement of the Maine Prevention Certification Board for those seeking certification in the state of Maine. The 31 hour course consist of 5 hours of on line training (Introduction to Substance Abuse Prevention) and 26 hours (over 4 days) of in-person instruction.
Tobacco Intervention: Intensive Skills Training
This two-day skills-focused training will build on knowledge gained in the Tobacco Intervention: Basic Skills Training. Participants will:
- Explore the value of a comprehensive tobacco use assessment
- Learn to develop effective treatment plans
- Discuss considerations for medication management
- Review relapse prevention strategies.
Clinicians will also spend time building on common counseling skills used in intensive tobacco treatment such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Tobacco Intervention: Intensive Skills
This one day training provides healthcare professionals with the information and tools needed to integrate brief, evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions into current practice. It has been well established that brief interventions can significantly increase quit attempts and lead to long term tobacco abstinence. During this event, which is led by licensed healthcare professionals, participants will learn about nicotine addiction, how to use effective, motivational strategies with their clients and patients who use tobacco, and the evidence base for providing quit assistance for those who are ready. Participants report that this one day training builds their confidence, allowing them to engage their patients at every visit and to provide knowledgeable assistance and referral. Fee includes breakfast and lunch.
Veteran Mentor of Maine Seminar
Our work involves Supporting and Mentoring Veterans who are involved with the Co-occurring Disorders Drug Court. You will have the opportunity to network with Court Officials, VA Representatives, Maine PreTrial Services, and other Mental Health workers on a weekly basis. You will provide mentoring, referrals for services, and occasional transportation. The free seminar will be at the University of Southern Maine, Portland Campus, Room 1 of Payson Smith Hall, located on Falmouth Street. There will be free parking at the USM parking garage on Bedford Street. April 18th, 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.
Understanding and Identifying Problem Gambling
As more and more opportunities for gambling are made available, it is increasingly important to improve the capacity and capability of behavioral health treatment providers to learn effective ways of addressing and treating gambling problems. This interactive training will offer a broad overview and definitions of gambling and problem gambling and how to begin to address this issue in a range of clinical settings. Effective strategies for screening and assessing problem gambling will be presented along with initial strategies for introducing intervention strategies to clients at risk for or experiencing gambling problems.
Ethics in Prevention
Ethics in Prevention provides opportunities to engage in discussions of the prevention code of ethics’ six key principles and explore a four-step decision-making model for assessing, addressing, and evaluating a range of ethical issues. Early bird Fee of $40.00, if paid by April 25th, 2018
Basics of Student Threat Assessment: Hit Lists and Bad Poetry
Student safety is always of the highest importance. The field of threat assessment is well researched, and relies on strong theoretical foundations to provide the safety your students need to reach their highest potentials. The practices you will learn in this training cut through fear and poor decisions to give you the tools you need to effectively develop and maintain a threat assessment protocol for your institution. By the end of the day, participants will be able to: 1) Identify risk and protective factors, 2) Detail the development and maintenance of a threat assessment team, and 3) Set a threat level regarding students of concern. Beyond the Basics in Suicide Prevention
The Beyond the Basics conference serves as a "best practice" conference offering participant in-depth and progressive information and the latest research in the field of suicide and suicide prevention. The conference is designed for an adult audience that has attained basic training and knowledge in suicide and suicide prevention, and wishes to expand their knowledge and ability to engage in suicide prevention in Maine.
Annual Tobacco Treatment & Prevention Conference
This two-day annual conference brings nationally recognized speakers and local experts together to discuss a wide array of tobacco treatment and prevention topics, new research and innovative approaches to tobacco control. It also provides an opportunity to network with other tobacco treatment professionals from across the state. This is the third required training offered in the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification pathway for healthcare professionals in Maine.
